I find a connection between spirituality and art. Meditation is a link for me between the worlds of art as an artist and an observer. When I am involved with either the activity of creating art or observing, I find myself being renewed in a spiritual sense. 

I have evolved over time as a painter. Initially painting was an act of creation. I had a goal in mind. There was an image or an idea that I wanted to produce. 

Now when I am painting, I may have an idea before I paint, but I am not as focused on the end result. My focus is on the present moment. I am being. The painting is becoming. I am more interested in watching my mind than I am the image before me; again, this is about being in the present moment. The end result is a record of the awareness that is expressed during the process. 

In my work, I acknowledge awareness, as well as the lack of awareness; understanding and not understanding. Emotions come up. Some are easily displayed. Others become covered up; sometimes this is through symbolism and at times simply by using the medium to put things back until another time. There is always the hope of an unpredictable opportunity to gain a new perspective.

Through my encaustic work, which utilizes layers of heated wax, I attempt to address various issues. It's much like those initial sparks of awareness that we have upon waking in the morning. We find ourselves beginning to recognize the fleeting tendrils of a dream or a profound realization only to emerge further from the slumber of sleep to observe that in the next moment that the perception is lost from our current state of mind.
